That's difficult to answer because the NHS is funded by taxation, but if you earn say £40,000 ($54,000) a year you'd pay about £7,500 in tax and national insurance. That covers everything though, from police and fire services to roads and the NHS! It also pays your stamp to cover your old age pension which you receive at 67!

Children, OAPs, the disabled and people on benefits pay jack shit!

That's for one person! If they're the only person in the family working, that's the total all 4 people would contribute!

If both parents are earning 40k a year, it would be double that, although I think couples these days can claim a huge chunk of tax back against the cost of chidcare?

The Democratic leadership doesn't want universal healthcare any more than the GOP leadership. Why would they hurt their primary donors. When it takes $25M...$50M...even $100M to run a high profile Congressional re-election campaign, where do you think the money comes from?

They had the votes in 2010 and could have done whatever. They had 60 democratic votes in the senate and a huge advantage in the House in when they ramrodded the ACA in. Essentially , it just expanded Medicaid which was fine. The primary beneficiary however, was the corporate health insurance cartel who gained millions of new taxpayer subsidized policies

I have solely Medicare, Des and it's not nearly as bad as i had expected it to be. I pay about $1260 a year for it and it covers 80% of my costs. Were that available to families across america then it would be a better thing than what we have now. A government fat with fiat money can easily afford that kind of healthcare, if it's benevolent. However, our's is violent and wishes to screw everyone, for profits, including it's own people.
