Sure it is, but it doesn't really exist in America except for the very rich and the very poor. It's a little better if you're gainfully employed in a full time job but deductibles of $2,000 and up for an 80/20 plan is becoming the norm. Monthly payments are way up and insurance companies are dropping out of the program like flies.
Obamacare is doomed in its current state without a major overall. I think it's a perfect time for the Democrats to dive head first into Medicare for all. They need something/anything besides resist and bash Trump to hang their hat on.
That being said, everyone who isnt insured should definitely enroll and ride it out as long as possible.

There is nothing "affordable" about it.
The average premium for a family of 4 with deductibles is often greater than 20,000 per year.
When the average person makes maybe 60,000 per year.

Obamacare is a complete cluster fuck. True.
But it is something.
Nothing but a complete disassembly of the insurance industry is going to make healthcare affordable or even available
to all in this country.
Along with huge revenue reserves, health insurance corporations also hold all the cards in government.
It must have really angered lobbyists and "in the pocket" congressmen(hello GOP) when a government program
was forced on them mandating they deliver rational and reliable health insurance that covers paying for anything less than critical hospital care for the nearly deceased. The "implosion" caused by these greed driven corporations(and doctors) will hopefully eventually reveal the filthy details of this nation wide scam and make congress look toward a more socialized system.
Doctors no longer have a fuck to give and are increasingly denying service to Obamacare recipients who don`t qualify
because of the wrong "group" they belong to.
Unfortunately the sick aren`t very good at rioting, which seems to be the only sure way to get attention, so the people who need care the most have the smallest voice in government. Good job men.
I am a Republican by the way.
I am resisting the callous words, actions and programs created to manipulate and profit
from a divided country.
And if Rump runs again in `20 I will definitely change my political affiliation because it will prove
that all Republicans must be complete imbeciles..

Why don't you fund a universal healthcare system through general taxation?
Those who can afford to, pay the most!
Seems perfectly fair to me!

Amen Des.
If only it were that easy.
You see, our version of Democracy is a greedier version than yours in the uk...
We have institutionalized greed here.
Hard habit to break.

The corporate healthcare industry is probably the single largest donor to members of the Congressional leadership on both sides. You buy a couple of dozen top leaders in each party and they pretty much dictate to the other 500 or so how to vote. All healthcare "reform", including the ACA began with the goal, not of providing "affordable" healthcare, but of preserving the price gouging and profit margins.

affordable healthcare is a great thing however ACA isn't it.
For profit healthcare needs to be done away with. State provided insurance sucks as well..
I'll give you an example.
I had a wisdom tooth pulled 2 months ago. Before I had insurance I asked what the total or upfront cost would would be out of pocket I was told they could extract a tooth for 300$
I paid with insurance and I had to paid 274.00 out of pocket before my insurance would cover the rest. and now 9 weeks later I get another bill from the dental office saying I owe an additional $78.00.
So had I paid all cash up front I would have saved at least 50$.
This is one of the reasons why I believe an HSA or FSA account should count as insurance coverage.

Re: Resist.
Well. Firstly, $300 for an extraction? You are being robbed. Secondly, how does it cost you more on health insurance then without? That literally makes no sense. Have you got horrible health insurance?
Health insurance is vital here too btw. Get cancer or something without it and youre fucked.

oh please
It was incredibly affordable/ compared to what was available before it
Prior to the ACA We were paying $24,000 a year for health insurance for 2 and we do not even use western medicine
(being self employed in this country is a hell hole)
with obamacare that was reduced to about $8,0000
THAT WAS A HUGE saving!
And there were many choices much cheaper than the one we chose...so I do not believe your numbers NYNY
It was not perfect and it is only now falling apart because this administration keeps signalling to the insurance companies that they will not pay and so they are leaving the cooperative. We need PROFIT removed from medicine. until then, we are all f^cked in this country

350 bucks for a tooth pulling?
You got fuckin' arse raped!
An NHS dentist will give you an emergency extraction for 18 quid! ... Buckshee if you're on the rock 'n' roll!
Peace, Des.
Re: Resist.
My dentist charges $90 for an extraction without insurance. And handed me a persciption for 30 10mg Percocets as a going away gift.

Wisdom teeth generally have to be surgically removed at a higher cost. At 18 quid do they use a pliers from Tessco?
Re: Resist.
I agree with MH the cost to remove a wisdom tooth is much higher than a normal molar. Also though, dental insurance and ophthalmology aren't covered by obamacare, nor any standard insurance policy. They have to be purchased separately thru ins. companies specializing in those services.

Joke lore has it that Irishmen go to the dentist to have wisdom teeth put in!
When I had my wisdom tooth extracted, the dentist, a bang tidy Scottish bird in her mid-forties, got her assistant to clasp her hands together and pin my head to the head rest! I had visions of her hiking up her skirt and straddling my face in a pair of crotchless knickers while the assistantant sucked on her nips!
Unfortunately I'd been watching too much porn on the internet, and it was simply a precaution to make sure I didn't wriggle too much while she pulled the motherfucking tooth out!
Peace, Des.

Racist my arse! Most of the Irish jokes I know were told to me by my Irish Father in Law, although he used to start them with "Did you hear the one about the Kerryman?"

My numbers may not be precise, but to call Obamacare "affordable" is a joke. Premiums seem to increase every year by double digits, access to Doctors and other medical services involves ever longer wait times. Other than you I don't see too many people defending its "affordability".
Middle class folks who don't qualify for subsidies are paying higher and higher prices. It is a DISASTER. It is UNAFFORDABLE. It needs to be repealed.
Re: Resist.
Compared to what she was paying, it's an enormous savings. Obamacare worked for her and the mate. And it worked for millions of people who now have access to Medicaid.
It's not sustainable, there is no interest in the current administration to fix it.
Singlepayer is a gift from the Gods for the Democrats but they won't take a stand, and we all know why. $$$$.

Re: Resist.
Taken from an article I read today on the internet:
"In Britain, the rationing of health care has meant prohibiting certain medications and limits on surgery for things like cataracts and knee and hip operations. Some medical boards have banned routine surgeries for patients who are obese or smokers.
The British have found rationing necessary partly because of the exorbitant cost of “free” medical care. Another reason is the shortage of professionals to provide this care. The number of general practitioners has fallen, and four out of 10 say they are unlikely to be practicing in five years. Just since March 2016 there’s been a drop of 5,000 nurses and midwives across the British health care system.
Many cite disillusionment with the quality of care provided to patients. It’s a legitimate concern. The U.K. ranks 20th out of 24 western countries for breast cancer survival. The U.S. is first. For ischemic stroke the U.K. is 25th out of 30 countries. The U.S. is fourth."
Now Des, your health system doesn't sound so great based on this and other articles I have read in the past about the UK healthcare system.
Would you be willing to confirm or deny any of these points?

I've been lucky enough never to need anything too major done medically! Breaks, cuts, an ingrown toenail and my adenoid and tonsils removing are the only time I've been in hospital!
The NHS dealt wonderfully with the births of my 4 kids and 5 grandchildren and my elderly Mum couldn't have received better care following her mastectomy if she'd been the Queen fuckin' Mother!
I'm retired now, but when I was working I could have had subsidised private medical insurance as part of my salary package!
I declined, partly on principle, but mainly because of my faith in the NHS to meet all my medical requirements!
Peace, Des.

Yeah, that article seems to be bollocks. The NHS seems to have done a very good job till now.
They might be fucked soon though, with Brexit.
