Peter Hoekstra, US Ambassador or Embarrassment?

Postby Dogbreath » Thu Jan 11, 1:48 pm

Not only can Trump make a fool of himself, the same can be said for his lackey lieutenants, referring to the new US ambassador to NL.

Dutch journalists peppered Hoekstra, who was tapped by Trump for the ambassadorship after 18 years as a Republican congressman from Michigan, with questions on unsubstantiated claims he made in 2015 about the chaos the “Islamic movement” had brought to the Netherlands.

“There are cars being burned, there are politicians that are being burned,” he had said at a conference hosted by a conservative group. “And yes, there are no-go zones in the Netherlands.”

He made a fool of himself in front of Dutch reporters.

It's embarrassing to be an American with a such fool for a president.

This is old news DB. I posted this in the continuing crises thread on December 22. But hey, how about your state and legal cannabis? Certainly looking like your state is on the fast track towards legalization!? Perhaps be the first in New England, since your neighbors are dragging their politcal feet and unlike any other state you have your politicians to thank for it! Appears you have very few fools in Vermont, DB.

What i've been reading all true? Also, have they broached the subject of where visitors will be able to toke their purchases?

No way it will be the first New England state to legalize cannabis.

Isn't Massachusetts supposed to start selling recreational cannabis in July?

Back on topic.

You can now add the Netherlands to Trump's list of shithole countries.

Btw, the Netherlands hasn't been impervious to all this far right neo nationalist business either so they can relate over there.

Appears you are correct Cali Guy. Massachusetts has already legalized, but i was thinking implementation of the legalization. Even so, according to the Cannabalist Massachusetts isn't backing down to the attorney general's decree, so they should indeed become the first state to implement their legalization. However, with Maine's governor, at least temporarily bottling the voter's initiative, perhaps Vermont could claim second place?

The thread doesn't need anymore white suburban patriarchy flexing from Cat to stay on topic, so I won't comment.

ok, so outside of the fact this rust belt yankee got his ambassadorship because he had the right last name or by whatever cronyism and promptly shot himself in the foot . is there areas in amsterdam best not ventured into by tourist, savvy locals avoid?

I haven't been in awhile SP, but i always found it one of the safest cites i'd ever visited, even pedaled across the Bos after dark, on more than one occasion. Usually lost, but got back safely every time. Dunno too many american towns you can do that in, you?

Not in Amsterdam proper but plenty of “best not to go after dark” areas in the Randstad. Not because of the recent refugee influx though.

Towns perhaps, many of them are mere crossroads, but cities not a chance at more than a small few and the nation's capital isn't one of them, by a long shot.

Perhaps a better question could be put to Peter about his home state of Michigan, like comparing the safety of Amsterdam to that of Detroit, or which is more important to Michigan's politicians their constituents health, or money, since it plainly appears to be the latter?

Incidentally, Vermont is on the verge of legalizing cannabis, if the governor signs it this time around. He didn't the last time, but has said he's 'inclined' to do so this time around. However, retail sales do not appear to be a part of the deal. Possession and personal grows only.

Except he wanted to know about Amsterdam. Thus the question. If he wanted to know about Michigan he would have asked?

Perhaps our politicians see that as a minus on their resumes? However, yes such a subject is completely avoided in polite company.

I believe the original question was posed to Peter about a comment he'd made in a speech about Amsterdam in 2015, about it's no go zones and areas prone to burning cars and politicians in the Netherlands! (Read the original post in this thread) Peter, being the jerk that he is denied the claim as "fake news". However, when shown the proof on video he denied ever denying he denied it! Anyone that confused about his own statements should very much be asked about his own sordid political record, imho and comparing it to the politics of the Netherlands would be very telling indeed i'd surmise.

An update on the sorry US Ambassador to NL, from an editorial in today's New York Times, titled,

"Dutch Reporters Show How to Keep American Officials Honest"

"... Looking like a deer in headlights, the ambassador tried to brush off his interrogators. Maybe Mr. Hoekstra had watched President Trump spew lies and hate without apology for so long that he thought he could get away with it, too. Not in The Hague, apparently. The journalists came back repeatedly — “This is the Netherlands, you have to answer questions,” one said."
