At ten times the immediate lethal dose – TEPCO is scrambling to find new robots and equipment that can sustain the radiation to locate and remove melting nuclear fuel. Their current robots and equipment cannot work within such highly radioactive environments. To make problems worse, levels of water within the reactors needed to keep the cores from melting down are getting dangerously low.

What really surprises me is that TEPCO are still in charge of anything.

Its been apparent from day one we have never been told lies lies and more lies.

"March 30, 2012 10:35 AM EST

Earlier this week, the 53rd of Japan's 54 nuclear reactors was shutdown for regular inspection, leaving just one reactor operating in the country"

So what is japan doing for power these days? they have turned to coal and oil.

Edano said the projected power shortfall is around 9.3%, Fuji reported. The biggest crunch is likely to be in the Kansai area which was largely unaffected by last year’s Fukushima nuclear crisis. Kansai Electric Power Co is projecting a shortfall of around 20% during the peak summer period

And the world can breath a sigh of relief. I don't beleive any of them will ever be put back on line again.

I would agree OF. What do they do for power?

Interestingly you yanks thought it a good time for a newie :)

Regulators on Thursday approved plans to build the first new nuclear power plant in the U.S. in more than 30 years, despite objections of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission chairman, who cited safety concerns stemming from Japan's 2011 Fukushima disaster.

I miss coal fires! You never went cold 'cos you could always find something to burn, even if, as in my mate's case, it was the floorboards out of his spare bedroom!

Peace, Des.

'One of the biggest issues that we face is the possibility that the spent nuclear fuel pool

that was a good read.

"The worse-case scenario drawn up by the government includes not only the collapse of the No. 4 reactor pool, but the disintegration of spent fuel rods from all the plant's other reactors. If this were to happen, residents in the Tokyo metropolitan area would be forced to evacuate."

'Spent reactor fuel cannot be simply lifted into the air by a crane as if it
were routine cargo. In order to prevent severe radiation exposures, fires
and possible explosions, it must be transferred at all times in water and
heavily shielded structures into dry casks. As this has never been done before'

'Many of our readers might find it difficult to appreciate the actual meaning
of the figure, yet we can grasp what 85 times more Cesium-137 than the
Chernobyl would mean. It would destroy the world environment and our
civilization. This is not rocket science, nor does it connect to the pugilistic
debate over nuclear power plants. This is an issue of human survival.'

You can get those spare tires in american snack and soda vending machines. The only difference it the spare tire winds up on your waistline, instead of your car.
