Personally, I would jump on the chance to buy a Z of top shelf weed for $250. All day long!

Here in Vermont, where the prohibition still remains in this once liberal state, street prices run US $300. to $400. an ounce. In one of the four licensed medical dispensaries in the state, a Z costs $400., and the quality of that product is not at all top shelf.

Here are real world production costs, which includes nutrients, electrical costs. Not included are indirect costs such as rent, water, carbon dioxide, pest management, waste disposal, equipment amortization/depreciation, cost of genetics and most importantly, labor.

Cost per gram: $1.16
Cost per ounce: $132.76
Cost per Pound: $524.09

It takes 1.94 kWh to produce one gram of bud. Which is an astounding and unsustainable amount of energy. A typical grow room has a lighting power density exceeding 50 watts per square foot..... MUCH higher then these power hungry large server farms.

Of the costs noted, 66% is for nutes and grow media, 22% is electricity (at state commercial average of $0.131 per kWh) and 12% for lamp replacement.

The electrical costs are based on a production metric of about .75 grams per watt. Some growers will do a little better, other worse. With the new high performance LED fixtures now starting to come online with test results just staring to come in, efficiency can be increased to 1.7 grams per watt and easily higher.

The above figures are based on retail grow shop nute costs; larger operations can cut costs by volume purchases. But the electrical costs would not "scale up" much with a large commercial operation.

The Vermont progressive party introduced a bill to legalize/ regulate cannabis a few weeks ago, which is going nowhere due to old school Democratic party blockage and a "no-way Jose" Republican party attitude. (How I envy western states voter initiatives!!!) The bill would prohibit any outdoor growing, a bad policy, IMHO, and would exacerbate current electric grid distribution problems by increasing annual state electrical consumption by at least 40,000 mWh per year.... likely much more if one factors in tourist purchases.

Nationally, cannabis production consumes 1% of all the electricity generated. In states like California (and now Colorado), it can be up to 7%.

Why work up these numbers? Two reasons:

1. It's what I do for a living (energy efficiency in buildings)

2. Part of a business plan I'm working looking into being a producer here in Vermont, following the very successful craft brewery model and cashing in on the Vermont "branding" (aka small scale, high quality, clean).

You can't manage what you can't measure.....

Now, where can I score some of that top shelf $250. a Z bud here in New England (all day long).

I dispute some of your math though. The gram to ounce price doesn't add up. But anyway.

I got good outdoor dope by meeting, unexpectedly, a group of individuals behind the Shaw's in Montpelier. Just walk along the side of Shaw's and cross the water on the bridge with the railroad tracks. Met them there on the side of that huge lot near the river. Total strangers at the time. Started talking. One thing led to another and the rest is history. All of us got stoned.
Didn't buy any at the moment and it was a good thing. Got thrown in jail later on that night. Cop drove me all the way to St. Johnsbury from Montpelier. I got out 4 days later and the fucking cops shorted me $50 and said they lost my jacket I had just purchased a few weeks earlier for $75. Fucking thiefs. And the fucking cops in Bennington are cocksuckers too.
South Burlington cops have shaken me down too.
Great little ride on the boat across Lake Champlain from Burlington to New York, isn't it?

But so far as indoor dope is concerned, I don't like the shit. I like outdoor weed and I love finding the occasional seed.

J, I was in Colorado back in March 2013. Went to a shop called 3D Cannabis Club (recommended by MHD) near the airport.
Bought 4 grams of weed, two strains. The better of the two by far was called "Deathstar". (Great name. Knocked the stuffing out of me)

Price was $16 per gram. Pricey but LEGAL.

I smoked hash at a rest stop in every state.

I was 21 at the time and was driving a '71 Olds Toronado so I was cruising in comfort. Each night I stopped at a rest stop, climbed in the back, locked the doors and slept as best as i could. I was on a very low budget.

You'd probably have to travel into York to hire a bike, or arrange to pick one up at the airport when you arrive!

So after paying licencing fees, insurance, staff, utilities, implementation of mandatory regulations, a storefront, equipment, supplies, marketing, etc. etc. etc. you think an oz. of top shelf weed should be $50.

Name one place besides Bizzaro World you can score an oz. of high quility weed for $50.

How many people have the room or desire to grow their own weed? Shezz could make bathtub gin and get just as drunk but he doesn't , Chig could grow his own tobacco but he doesn't, I could grow my own weed but I don't.

I believe everyone should be paid for their labors. Brokers, salespeople, bus drivers, hamburger flippers and yes, weed growers too.

For the good weed, a fair price in the USA is $200 - 250 per ounce.
In Colorado, due to the Gov't regulations and taxes, this translates to $400 - 500 an ounce.

Like OF said, if you think these prices are high (and they ain't cheap ) grow your own. However as MHD stated, growing quality weed takes effort.

Weed prices vary depending where you live. You couldn't find an ounce of good weed in Charlottesville Virginia for example for less than $300-400 if you were lucky enough to find it at all. WC said in NYC it can be as high as $600. Nobody that lives in Colorado is paying more than $200 an ounce at the moment. Keep in mind it's the best pot grown on the planet and there are a dizzying amount of strains available everywhere.
