Never been there, but there are scores of seaside towns like this all around the coast, from North Shields to Brighton to Morecambe, all built by wealthy Victorians as summer residences. Most of them are in a state of disrepair having never recovered from the dawning of the age of mass air travel combined with a taste for more adventurous pursuits than lying on a beach and trudging around a funfair.

It's quite grim reading though. And this has all happened in my lifetime. I remember going to Skegness, Scarborough, Blackpool when I was a kid and they were absolutely heaving with people. I went to Skegness recently and it was absolutely dead. even the free car parks were empty.

I went to the Butlins camp at Bognor in the mid 60's. It was okay.

I think that's the old Butlins camp in the background.

Lytham St Annes is still a nice day out so long as your kids are under 10!

Teenagers would probably find it dull as ditchwater!
