Winkle for breakfast
It feels like there are more tourists at the winkle then locals
Which seems unusual, in the past it would be fully loaded with locals
Enjoying the morning sun. Today not so much
We got bikes this morning
And immediately we were off to Vondel park
To enjoy the wind in the face sense of bike freedom
It is beautiful and everything is beginning to feel right in the world
Went to a T & T at cafe 137 and met a leprechaun from ACD along with Gapie. The leprechaun was a nice chap from Ireland celebrating a birthday.
A leprechaun voiced an observation, that I have also noticed... But thought it was just me and perhaps the more jaded eyes I am seeing through on this trip
His words:
Amsterdam used to be more bouncy
Happy, unique. Music coming from everywhere. Happy engaged creative people
It now seems much more guarded
Less music, less spontaneity
And filled with more tourists than residents
Some of the over riding creative craziness appears to be missing.
In Het Parool today there is an article on how it is the "yups" (yuppies to you and I) who are ruining Amsterdam. Wanting their city, orderly and neat.
Last week the head of the Reich museum was saying how Amsterdam had become too popular and was being over run by tourists. That if they were not careful it could turn into Venice. I see it and it is sad.
Really - it seems there are even more tourists on bikes then locals! I hate being a part of something that is ruining the very place I love. Humans -we are our own blight. This year again the hartjesdagen festival will not take place, because of the tourist issue - I heard locals complaining even about the gay pride celebration...too many tourists showing up.
Rode over to kadinsky's to play some pinball and I can report that we smoked the worst pot on the trip thus far from them.
More riding around the city
I am beginning to relax into being here
I think it is hard when you continually return to a place you love
I am a lover with expectations
We made reservations a week ago for
Dinner at Toscanini. We would have never gotten in if we had not done that.
I actually highly recommend the place, the food is country Italian. Lovely meal.
The mate made a request for some reggiano parmigiano
The waiter bent down next to the table and said the chef would have his head!
And then he explained there were 2 very important rules to follow
1 - no cheese on pasta with fish
2 - do not cut pasta with a knife (well no one was cutting pasta with a knife)
The waiter did return with the cheese and with a back handed move delivered the cheese to our table.
We had a nice late night stroll thru the Jordaan and returned to the boat and noticed it was 1am. The days are moving way too fast.

fucking hell fire. I suppose at least he didn't say drug tourists, but what the fuck is wrong with cloggies these days? and what is going on when the cunt in charge of a place that without doubt services more tourists than locals is spouting shite like that?
will anne and her pals never be happy?

A view that , if I was a resident , id have an amount of sympathy with . I mean, what an absolute pisser to have your wonderfully pretty capital over run with Stags, Hens , sex tourists and pot heads . It doesn't get any more base, does it ?
However , im not . And neither are you WC . For a variety of reasons and unusually, I haven't been over for around two years . Your reporting , as ever, has given me a bit of an urge . Keep it coming .

Hopefully they've upgraded the air circulation system. Last time I was in there the cigarette smoke was so thick it nearly made me pass out.

Thanks guys!
Boney - yeah, missed Kees the last time. I will see if I can do it this time- though a smokey venue will definitely keep me away.
Thanks chichi - glad you like <3
I agree Red. My neighborhood in NYC used to be a real neighborhood - you knew everybody on the streets. Now they have built some hotels and clubs and the streets are crowded with people with no street sense, blocking sidewalks with suitcases, staring at maps with no regard to the life around them. It is maddeningly frustrating.
oh yeah and they sit on OUR benches! Damn pushy tourists!
