Something Different

Postby Blackstone » Fri May 06, 8:55 pm

Leaving a little later than usual this year because my friends Canal Boat availability has changed due to her having to be in Amsterdam this May. I decided to do something different and leased a Penichette Barge for two weeks to cruise around the country side leaving from Loosdrecht. At about 30' it should be a good fit for the two of us. Have the required permits for Amsterdam and looking forward to tying up at the Canal Boat for a couple of days and taking my friend and some of the neighbors around the city captaining my own vessel. This really has me psyched for this years visit. It’s a shorter stay but certainly new experience.
Hope the UBL and 9/11 threads get sorted out.

That sounds like a great trip Blackstone...No chance of a garbage strike interfering with you out on the open water. (-:

Have fun...a few photos and a trip report would be great.

Good pictures OF!!!

And for Blackstone, we did a similar thing some years ago.
We rented a yacht for a week and cruised around from Sneek to Groningen and back. It was a fantastic experience and a good laugh; i still do not know how they dared to give us the keys to handle the damn boat.
We avoided cruising Amsterdam. All those floodgates seemed too complicated for such a crew of cretins.

At around 11 meters the boat was a good size for the two of us, a quiet generator, more than adequate fuel and water supply. I didn’t put as many hours on the engine as I had expected, we were happy to tie up along a secluded canal and bike around the more unassuming villages.
The trip into Amsterdam was something I have wanted to do. It was a blast for me. I picked up my Amsterdammer friend and a few of her neighbors. While I loved navigating around the city they having done this countless times concentrated on the refreshments. They did however really enjoy the cruise up to Monnickendam. A bow thruster would have been a neat addition, I could have worked some tricks with that in the city.
The trip up the Groot Noordhollandsch Kanaal was easy and had it’s moments. But by far the more intimate waterways and villages was what made the trip.
Clearly this sort of trip isn’t to everyone’s taste, if you want something different to do in the Netherlands, I wholeheartedly recommend it.
