And some highlights from September 2008:

Alto Jazz Café- runs Monday night Jazz in addition to other music during the week. It almost like a strip mall location, with its long thin space- L shaped bar, side stools against the walls, and another set of weird bathroom crazy access stairs! 8 tables up front by the band. StandupBass, drums, and piano, and a really clean pure classic jazz feel. The bartender will be playing music the next night!

Two doors down from Korsakoff is Maloe Malo, a Blues and Rock Club- Jerry the bartender has been there 24 years, and the walls are pics of him with famous rockers. Nice art on the walls- all live pics from the bar with stars from the past/current- much of it is signed; front bar for just drinks, back bar with the band is separated by doors, whole place is thin and long like a strip mall spot. Classic 4 piece blues band (drums, lead and rhythm guitar (both Stratocasters), and bass) playing serious old blues. Spent set break talking to the rhythm man about the band, their sets, the music scene, and the Florida Keys music scene! The lead of the group, in skills and presence, is taller, with long blond rock hair, chewing gum, and sweating like Patrick Ewing (noted NBA heavy-sweater). He steps in and out of the songs- to sing, play, observe, coach, etc. He had all the licks, and played them in sequence, but the band wasn’t tight coming in/out of leads.

The Waterhole bar, in the Leidesplein, usually has live rock music at least 5 nights a week, and a good mix of tourist and locals. Band is only medium good, they have a small chick who sings some songs with them very well, and the harmonica player is pretty good, and has some depth. During set break, the harp player and I speak for a little, and he is just sitting in with this band, doesn’t normally play with them. Later, he sees my in the bar, and asks me to buy him a beer. I smile, and say sure - thank him for the jams, and keep moving.

We decide to go to Bourbon Street, another bar with live music in the area. Outside on the roof above the entrance, they have lifesize replicas of the Blues Brothers in mid song and dance. Bourbon Street is a single large room, with bar on the right, and band is on raised stage in the center, and seating on the left, but mostly standing areas. The band is AWESOME, lead by a big dude with tall snakeskin boots and jeans, with black tshirt and larger beerkeg belly. He plays note for note perfect searing blues and rock, and with massive stage presence.
