Great report again, LH. It's part 5 and I finally arrived in town. When I walked in and saw all the Channelites staring at me, I got a case of the shys and headed straight for BOhannon. Hadn't seen Bo since CA. We talked about it a lot and finally made it to Amsterdam together with our friend Artusa...

The truly odd thing about cannibis is that we know more about it than ever. It has been studied and found by many to be harmless in comparison to alcohol and tobacco. The jails are filled with people whose pot crimes range from trying to sell tons, to posession of a joint to introducing buyer to sel...

I should include that the discussions with my daughter was never a showdown over smoking. That was one of those non-issues that got discussed vaugely when they came up. And when they did, we discussed the politics and medical effects of pot smoking as opposed to what my personal habits were. But on ...

We didn't talk or get together much but I'd still tell your daughter: "Hey, your folks could just as easily have left you at home but they decided to bring you along with the hopes that you would be enriched by a trip to Europe. They made special time for you. It wasn't all about them. Not only that...

Your reports are great. Interesting interaction between you and Miss DM. My daughter turns 21 in 12/06. What a nice gift it would be to take her to Amsterdam to celebrate. I'm always looking for an excuse to get back there. That'd be a good one.

LH - Great read. You're a cannibis Kerouac. The part about your grandparents was very moving. Quite a way to set the scene for the story you tell. I share your feelings about Amsterdam and how it exudes a type of positive energy that transcends anything we find at home. I'm reminded of that every ti...

Great report, DM. On my first trip to Amsterdam, my daughter was with me. She was 12. I had sturn und drang with her as well because she wanted to sleep late, watch TV and eat chocolate. It was on this trip when I found out the truth about coffeeshops. When I ducked out, it was to go to an internet ...

I like the new Rockerij. I don't think it's quite caught on yet so it wasn't as crowded. We were dithering but finally decided we had to go in. I think I got some Kali Mist there. Was the only place I saw it. A perennial fave.

They looked my luggage over because I was transferring on to San Francisco. TSA did the checking, not Customs. I was not pulled out of line or sniffed by a beagle. Never saw the beagles. After clearing customs, I was directed to transfers where my stuff got checked. I made the big hurdle. Speaking o...

Today was the big Channelites boat ride. We all fit into one boat and it didn't turn into a flotilla as previously thought. What great fun being able to toke our way through the canals in an open boat on a sunny day. The weather has been nice every day I've been here. Lots of people waved at our int...

Ahhh-hh-hh, ya know? The smoking thing wasn't/isn't a problem because both are nice places. The Brouwer (I did stay there in '02) is close to stuff. If you can't find a place to smoke, you're not looking well enough. There was a bench close to the Adolesce by the Amstel that became known as the "Gro...

Had a great meal at WIlma & Alberts earlier tonight. The service was kind of slow and they forgot the frites at our table, but they gave me a Texas sized pile o' ribs that I couldn't finish. That was the thing to get especially with the relationship of the dollar to the euro. I give it $1.32 to ...

Reflections From Six Trips

Amsterdam changed my life. It helped make me more a man of the world. I got out of my country and experienced another culture to the point where things are familiar and I get mistaken for a local. I'd be lying if I didn't say a good reason for coming was the ultimate freedom of a society that allowe...

The ones in the Blomenmarkt were particularly nice because they reminded me of my trip from about a year ago. Your other ones are nice too. Can't wait to get back. Looks like next year.
