Trip Report - Day 15

So this was to be our last full day of this wonderful vacation. We got an early start (at least for us) as there was some shopping to be done as well as packing. Off to de Bierkoning for some beers that we simply cannot find back home. In particular some Westveletrens and some selections we like fro...

Trip Report - Day 14

Going to Graceland, Graceland....but not the one in Memphis but right here in Amsterdam West! So in doing some research for some live music options, I discovered that there was a new bar-b-q joint that had opened recently. Owned and started by a guy from NYC, they do southern smoked bar-b-q and have...

Trip Report - Day 13

Woke up to a lovely Saturday morning. Less than a week from Christmas, the city is now all dressed up and bustling with shoppers and tourists and Mrs. Thai and yours truly! First stop today was for those fantastic oysters at the Haring stand on Utrechtsestraat. Man are they good, big and salty and f...

Tri Report - Day 12

Another leisurely morning relaxing in and around the apartment. It was Friday and the tour groups were gathering down below our window. I counted no less than 6 of them in a period of 30 or so minutes. We are right on the edge of the Red Light District and Dam Square so I guess there was a lot for t...

Trip Report - Day 11

Yet another beautiful day today! Off to our typical start with coffee, quick trip to the GH for a bag, wait for Mrs. Thai to get ready, and then off to lunch. Over to t'Loosje on the Nieuwmarkt again for our club sandwiches and fine local beers. Such a great way to start the day. This is another one...

Trip Report - Day 10

The Mrs. and I both slept in this morning after having a little too much fun yesterday and last night. On the agenda for today was the opening of the new Star Wars movie at the Tuschinski. We had already purchased our tickets to the 4 pm showing so all that was left to do was to have a late lunch an...

Trip Report - Day 9

Woke up yet again to another sunny and beautiful December morning. Throughout the years I have visited at all different times but this was my first trip during the early to mid December time period. Really didn't know what to expect but as always knew to pack layers and an umbrella. Never really nee...

Trip Report Days 7 and 8

Day 7 Lost my notes but pretty sure that we had a lazy Sunday around the apartment as yesterday was a barn burner! Day 8 Another typical start for us. Wound up leaving the apartment at around noon and made our way to Utrechtsestraat and to the Onder Oovieaar for lunch. Delicious as usual as was the ...

Re: the Second Handful of My Amsterdam Days

Really do not have to do anything, do not have to run anywhere. This is the luxury of having three weeks in Amsterdam: we can just 'be' today. I know what you mean. No rush to get out and to be out and about all the time like when you only have a few days. Thanks for the reports, getting me excited...

Trfip Report- Day 6

Awoke to a beautiful Saturday morning! Again sunny skies and temps in the mid 40's. Being a creature of habit, same routine as before with a stop at the GH for the volcano and a cappuccino and then back home to wait for my lady to arise. Wonder if "arise" is not the correct word as it make...

Trip Report - Day 5

Another beautiful day today! Temps in the mid 40's and sunny. We're hoping our luck holds for the rest of the trip as this is just perfect weather for us. We still get a rather late start as we are pretty locked into this routine. Awake at 9 for me , coffee, GH for a couple of bags, wait for my belo...

Trip Report- Day 4, Part 2

It's now around 5 pm so we know that Gollem is open and most likely starting to fill up so we take the short walk down Spuistraat, then a right onto Raamsteeg and we grab the last 2 available seats at the bar. The bartender and a few of the locals are familiar and greetings are exchanged . Now its t...

Trip Report Day 4 Part 1

Today started pretty much the same as yesterday. A nice cup of coffee, caught up on the news on tv, then over to the GH for a couple of bags, this time I tried their white widow which was very good. Back to the apartment to wait for Mrs. Thai to rise, and I put on some tunes on the stereo that came ...

Trip Report Day 3

So by now we're in our routine. I'm up and about at around 9 am and start the day with a yummy coffee from the machine in the apartment and catch up on the news. The television is a nice flat screen but the selection of channels leaves a lot to be desired as there are only a few channels in English,...

Yes we did have a blast! We discovered these cafes throughout the years and we always find a few more each new visit. Most of the bars have been around for a long time, a few even hundreds of years.

Trip Report Day 2

We slept in late this morning and lounged around the apartment until noon. Funny but seems like every trip it takes us a few days to figure out the coffee selection that housekeeping leaves us since the individual foil packs lack the needed description. This time instead of trial and error I actuall...

Trip Report Day 1

The flight over was only about half full, a perk of flying in the off season in early December. Mrs. Thai and I each had a row to ourselves, so fully reclined we were able to sleep for a few hours of the 7+ hour trip across the pond. Arrived at our apartment, climbed the 2 flights of steps, opened t...

Trip report long overdue

Been a long time since I posted but since I'm in planning mode for our next visit in December I thought I'd gather my notes from last December's visit and post a report. First, a little background. I've been traveling to Amsterdam pretty regularly (at least once a year) for the past 15 years. As to ...

Merry Christmas!

This will be the first year in many that I will not be in Amsterdam for the holidays. I started reading over some of my old trip reports from years past and thought that I'd recycle this one as it brought a smile to my face and rekindled those feelings of being in my favotrite city during this speci...

New Year's Trip - Day Eight

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 4TH, 2006 - DAY EIGHT We got ourselves ready and out of the room at 10:30 am which was relatively early for us and had breakfast at de Bakkerswinkel on Warmoestraat. M had a delicious spinach quiche and I had the French breakfast that consisted of their homemade breads and jams. A...
